Roll Label Printing — Industry-Specific Solutions for Food, Cosmetics and Industrial Products
Roll Label Printing — Industry-Specific Solutions for Food, Cosmetics and Industrial Products
A label is your product's silent representative on the shelf — the first layer of information a consumer sees, the first document a regulator will inspect, and the proof of your brand's color consistency. In the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and industrial sectors, choosing the right label is not merely an aesthetic decision; it is a compliance responsibility. With a daily production capacity of more than 1 million labels, Printer Ofset's Bornova Roll Label Facility delivers solutions that meet sector-specific regulations.

What is a roll label?
A roll label is a label produced as a continuous reel on an adhesive-backed film carrier, typically applied automatically to product packaging by labeling machines. Unlike the sheet-fed label format, roll labels offer the following advantages:
- Automation compatibility: Can be applied to 300+ products per minute on production lines (bottling, boxing and packaging lines)
- Lower waste: 15–25% less label waste compared with single-cut, manual application
- Variable data: A different barcode, batch number or expiration date on every label (with digital roll printing)
Three variables are critical in roll label production: material (paper, film, metallized), adhesive (permanent, removable, cryogenic) and printing technique (flexo, digital, rotogravure).
Industry-specific label types
The label needs of different sectors are fundamentally different — material, regulation and production speed are each optimized accordingly.
Food labels — compliance with food safety regulations is mandatory:
- EU Regulation 1935/2004 on "materials intended to come into contact with food"
- Turkish Food Codex labeling provisions
- Standardized layout for allergen and nutritional information
- Low-migration inks (require ink migration testing)
Cosmetic labels — INCI nomenclature, PAO (Period After Opening) symbols, batch number traceability:
- EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009
- FDA-style U.S. export standards (21 CFR Part 701)
- Waterproof lamination (durability for bath and shower products)
Pharmaceutical / medicinal cosmetic labels — legibility and anti-counterfeit measures:
- Braille embossing (EU Pharmaceutical Directive 2001/83/EC)
- Hologram or anti-counterfeit UV printing
- Barcode + QR (pharmaceutical track-and-trace systems)
Industrial and chemical product labels — hazard warning standards:
- CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008) — GHS pictogram compliant
- UN hazard code color coding
- Resistance to solvents, heat and UV (outdoor use)
Logistics and shipping labels — thermal printing compatible:
- Thermal transfer line compatibility (barcodes remain intact after scanning)
- Cold-chain compatible (frozen food shipments)
Material options and durability
Label material is chosen according to the product's usage environment and shelf life. The standard material portfolio at the Bornova facility:
| Material | Durability | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| White paper | Indoor, dry environments | Artisan food, cosmetics, household cleaning |
| Clear vinyl (BOPP) | Water, oil, low temperatures | Bottle labels, sauces, oil products |
| Metallized film | Premium, glossy reflection | Perfume, spirits, luxury segment |
| Opaque white vinyl | Outdoor, UV resistant | Garden chemicals, industrial |
| Thermal label | Barcode scannability | Shipping, logistics, cold chain |
| Chromo board | Premium tactile feel | VIP products, perfume boxes |
The lamination layer (cellophane, UV varnish, water-based protective coating) directly determines a label's durability. Cold-chain food products require a special cryogenic adhesive — standard adhesives detach from the surface below -18°C.
Flexo vs. digital label printing
Two printing technologies dominate label production, and both run on parallel lines at the Bornova facility.
Flexo printing — economical for high-volume (100,000+ label) projects:
- Requires cylinder plate preparation (setup cost ~2,500–5,000 TL)
- Per-unit cost is lowest at high volumes — at 1 million labels the unit cost drops below 0.05 TL
- 4–8 color printing, with spot Pantone and opaque white support
- Water-based inks — sustainable, with food-approved variants available
Digital label printing — for short runs, personalized or frequently changing designs:
- No plate preparation — printed directly from a digital file
- Per-unit cost is largely independent of volume — the unit price difference between 500 and 50,000 labels stays in the 20–30% range
- Variable data (a different barcode/batch number on each label) is automated
- CMYK + opaque white + spot + metallized ink combinations
Decision criteria:
- Under 1,000 labels → digital (90% of cases)
- Between 1,000 and 50,000 → calculated case by case (plate cost is decisive)
- 50,000+ → flexo (more economical in the long run)
Regulations and compliance
For our customers selling into international markets, label compliance is part of the project delivery criteria. The Printer Ofset operations team actively monitors the following regulations:
- EU 1935/2004: Materials in contact with food. Ink migration testing + food-safe lamination compliance.
- CLP 1272/2008: Chemical product hazard labeling. GHS pictogram color and size, language coverage (TR + target country language).
- PPWR (2025–): EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. Recyclability classification + minimum marking size.
- Turkish Food Codex: Mandatory nutritional value table + allergens emphasized in italic bold.
- ISO 9001:2015: Printer Ofset's own quality management certification — a guarantee of process traceability in label production.
On critical export projects, label approval goes through a two-stage review using a proof print + target-market standards document: the Printer Ofset operations team and the customer's regulatory team.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order quantity?
500 units for digital label printing; the economical entry point for flexo is around 50,000 units. Different size variants of the same design (e.g. 50 ml + 100 ml + 250 ml) can be combined in a single order — the minimum is calculated separately for each variant.
Is barcode or QR scan accuracy guaranteed?
A scan quality test is performed for every order — graded A/B/C according to GS1 standards. GS1 Grade A scan quality is our standard commitment. For cold-chain or heavy-use projects, thermal transfer compatibility is verified separately.
How is color fidelity (Pantone) guaranteed?
A physical proof print is approved for every project. When a Pantone spot color is used, color is measured with the X-Rite spectrophotometer at the Bornova facility and the ΔE (color difference) value is reported as <2.0. On large runs, batch-to-batch consistency is monitored.
Is there extra time/cost for food-safe labels?
Food-approved lamination + low-migration ink add roughly 3 business days of additional lead time and an 8–12% increase in material cost over the standard process. For prestige food brands, it is a feature worth the investment.
What sustainable label options are available?
FSC-certified paper, recycled film, compostable adhesives and water-based inks are all available across every Bornova production line. In addition, label-and-bottle mono-material projects can raise the recycling class.
